So, because I need another social media platform to help me procrastinate, I’ve delved into the world of of Periscope! If you aren’t familiar, it’s a fairly new social media platform (3 months old) linked to Twitter, that allows you to livestream and interact real time with your viewers anywhere in the world. I checked it out and I’m a bit obsessed!
Last night I broadcasted my first scope all on achieving perfect summer skin. I shared tips for hydrating your skin, controlling oil, lighter summer complexion product choices, the perfect choices for body and face bronzing and of course everybody’s favorite, highlighting.
My beauty scopes will tend to be very product recommendation and information heavy, so I’ll be doing ScopeCaps (Periscope Recaps). Cute right? So, check out the ScopeCap on yesterday’s Makeup Q&A all on perfecting summer skin!
1. Stay hydrated! You’ve heard it a zillion times, but I’m going to tell you again. Drink more water. Summer means heat and high temperatures mean sweat. Sweat means higher amounts of water loss from the body than you would typically experience in cooler temperatures, so it’s important to replenish that. Do this by increasing your actual intake of water, but also your intake of water rich fruit and veggies.
2. Wear sunscreen 365 days of the year. No excuses. Everybody needs to wear sunscreen. Yes, black folk, us too! Visit ThisThatBeauty for the most in depth breakdown for SPF products worth your coins; most if not all are brown girl friendly too!
3. Do not wear Milk of Magnesia! Yes, it does stop oil production, but so much so that it almost completely brings it to a halt. Sebum is the naturally produced oil in our skin that keeps us looking youthful and keeps our skin glowing. Continued use of MOM will compromise and slow down sebum production resulting in early aging of skin. Check below for great alternatives.
4.Use a lighter moisturizer for the season. Focus on hydrating with water instead of topical remedies.
5. The oil cleansing method is a great alternative for people with dry, normal and combo skin. Oil cleansing mimics the natural oil production of sebum. Cleanse with carrier oils like EVOO. Lock in moisture of damp skin with natural oils high in EFA like evening primrose oil and rosehips oil.
Now, to the product recommendations.
[Oil & Shine Control]
Embryolisse Hydrat Mat
No worries if you battle excessive oil production. Hydra-Mat is great for keeping the skin hydrated, but also at limiting shine.
Nurturing Force Oil Control
Guaranteed oil control! Use this after the Hydra Mat followed by your makeup and you’re sure to be shine free, but hydrated for the day or night!
Whiphand Cosmetics Set the Stage
Use this before your makeup to help fill in fine lines and wrinkles and to essentially make your makeup bulletproof! If you aren’t ready to delve in fully, they offer samples for purchase.
[Dry to Normal Skin]
Embryolisse Lait Cream Concentrate
My current go-to moisturizer. Helps attract water to the skin. Works for a variety of skin types.
[Lighter Coverage Complexion Products for Summer]
Kiss NY BB Cream
Helps to even out your skin tone and offers great coverage without being too heavy. Not to mention it’s very cost-effective. Purchase at your local beauty supply store or here.
Purchase here or at your local drugstore.
Cover FX CC Cream
Similar benefits to BB cream, but with a time release SPF that is brown girl friendly!
Purchase at your local Sephora or here.
Becca Cosmetics Ever Matte Shine Proof Foundation
Light weight foundation that works to keep the skin matte and oil free. And the shade range is very brown girl friendly!
Purchase in your local Sephora or here.
[Summer Powder Choices]
Mehron HD Celebre Powder Foundation
Powder foundations are a great alternative to cream or liquid foundations for the summer. Mehron HD Celebre has great coverage, it’s lightweight, the texture is beautiful and silky and the color range is wonderful.
MAC Mineralized Skin Finish
Perfect for helping to eclipse any imperfections in the skin without being heavy. Slightly reflective so it adds a nice glow to the skin. Wear over BB cream, CC cream, foundation or by itself.
Ben Nye Translucent and Ben Nye Luxury Powders
Perfect for setting cream and/or liquid complexion products without adding too much color. Well processed, so the texture and finish is silky and beautiful. Everyone loves banana, and I do too, but Topaz leaves the most beautiful golden glow on applicable skin shades.
Shea Moisture Bronzing Powders
The folks at Shea Moisture really got it right with their bronzers. The deeper shades are my favorite, but the size of the reflective particles make these perfect for shading without looking sparkly.
Purchase at your local Target. (If you can find it.)
Cover Girl Queen Collection Bronzers
Cost effective and incredible quality. Need I say more?
Purchase in your local drugstore or here.
Guerlain Terracotta Bronzer
The OG’s of the bronzer game. Guerlain’s Terracota Bronzers have been around for ages and they continue to be some of the best in the game. Definitely a luxury cosmetic choice, but the quality is well worth it.
Purchase in your local Nordstrom, Bloomies, Saks, or Neiman’s or here.
Perfect for hiding skin imperfections and strengthening overall sexy in more ways than you can imagine.
MAC Bronzing Oil
Why they only have this in special collections I don’t understand, but it you’re able to catch it make sure to stock up. You can’t really go wrong with body oil and shimmer. You just can’t.
Mehron Aura Bronzing Gel
A milder option. Not as many reflective particles, but great for creating a subtle glow and perfecting the skin.
Inglot Stardust mixed with body lotion.
My favorite combo for body bronzing. Not sure what magic Inglot used to create this Sparkling Dust, but the particles start out large then perfectly melt into the skin for the most beautiful finish. Mix with your favorite body lotion and not you have your favorite body bronzer. Use with caution though, it packs a huge punch and a little goes a long way.
Prtty Peaushaun Skintight Body Lotion
Luminous body lotion available in 4 shades. Conditions, nourishes and firms skin while providing beautiful glow. Interesting smell, but it makes the skin look incredible!
Inglot Sparkling Dust
Yep, Inglot Sparkling Dust is safe for use on the face as well; eyes included. Do you see why I am completely in love? Again, take it easy though; a little bit goes a long way.
Ruby Kisses All Over Body Bronzer
Hella bang for a few bucks. My ultimate favorite highlighter. Particle size and finish are absolute perfection. Available in 4 shades.
Beccas Shimmering Skin Perfector
Go ahead and believe the hype on this one. It really is that good. Becca just continues to get it so right. Use the cream or the powder independently or layer the powder over the cream for the cray cray highlight and glow magic. Definitely a favorite!
Purchase at your local Sephora or here.
The Makeup Finishing Spray Mineralized and The Makeup Finishing Spray Bridal are both fantastic. The difference is that Bridal offers a silkier finish. Both will have your makeup in place for the full day. #staysnatched
A pro makeup artist secret. Primarily used for theatrical makeup, so if it can hold stage makeup in place it’s sure to keep your smokey eye in place! #staysnactched
